You cannot underestimate the importance of link building to boost your website in the search rankings.

Link popularity is a crucial factor in how a search engine views your website. It makes sense really, a link appears like a recommendation of your website, the more recommendations you have, the more important your website must be. Some companies spend a fortune on link building because they know how important it is, but there are websites out there that will provide quality links to your website for nothing, so make the most of them.

Directories ruled the worldwideweb before search engines took over. They were the original method of seeking out websites for the topic you were interested in, but they are far from redundant now. Just look at the Google page ranks of the many free directories out there and you will see how highly valued they are. What have you got to lose by submitting your site to a free directory? Either a search engine will value it, a customer will stumble across it or neither, but how much did it cost you? That's right, NOTHING!!

Search engines are incredibly sophisticated these days and can easily distinguish reciprocal links from one way links. One way links are of much higher value than reciprocal links because it's harder to obtain them. If a website recommends your website without anything in exchange then it appears to highly value your website.
