850th city anniversary

"Building Bridges" – Munich turns 850 years old

The year 1158 is considered the official year that Munich was founded. Heinrich the Lion built a bridge over the Isar River to guide the Salt Route through what is now the city center. It marked the beginning of Munich's future. Now, 850 years later, the city is having a huge birthday celebration, the likes of which are only possible every 50 years. The program of events includes exciting evenings and magnificent parties, cultural events and folk art as well as music, theater and plays. You can catch a concert at the Munich Philharmonic, stroll down the Old Ring Road devoid of cars, experience the city as a theater, take in the lights along the banks of the Isar, enjoy traditional dancing or "rock out" in the streets. Tap a keg and celebrate with your neighbors, discover the city's unknown treasures, marvel at the wonders of science, and take a close look at companies and the work they do.
